Have you been reading a book related to education and/or gifted children? What is it? Do you like it, or is there a better one you'd rather tell us about?
I recently finished Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. He makes you re-think how we perceive ability and hopefully will improve assessments for gifted children.
Read it too. Copied, do not tell the copyright police, the Math Test and Rice Paddies and Marita's chapter to discuss with my 5th and 6th graders. It was fun--great discussion. Trying to get the 'effort' message across--didn't work with the 6th graders!! haha!!
Last year - waiting for jury duty - I read Nerds: Who They Are and Why We Need More of Them. It's by a child psychologist who looked at the impact of the term "nerd" on children and where the divide between intellectualism and machismo began. I've been pressing it teachers on my school and everyone who has read it has a reaction similar to mine. The book is affirming for those who work with gifted students, but it also points out the long way we have to go to really raise the bar.
