I started doing podcasts last year with GarageBand. Very simple. And it has sound effects. I have one twice-exceptional student (who can't make decisions) very excited about finishing a story so he can record it and add sound effects. A great positive for this kid who's made things tough the last year.
Podcasts have been great! I have several podcasts recommending books on my web page. So far this year the podcast for one of Blue Balliett's books, The Wright 3, has sparked other students to start reading her first one, Chasing Vermeer. Great books! Kids have loved them.

I've started blogging with Edmodo.com
I have 4 schools a distance apart. It's bringing them together and an unexpected benefit is some of the shy ones have blossomed. They find it more comfortable to communicate via their groups that I've put them in. It's particularly helped with some responsibility issues. I particularly like that it's private (I'm K-6). The teachers allow the students to do this in the classroom if they have a question for me since I only see them once a week. The students don't have the option of sending private notes to other students. Their notes to me are private. And I can send private notes to them. I haven't done much yet with homework. I check it every day. If there is any abuse, bullying, etc. (we went over this ahead of time) then that student is done.

My Middle School students entered the world of Wikispaces last year. It was a real learning experience for those who thought they were "in the know". While learning to navigate, they enjoyed learning about each other's research.

One of the most useful tech tools that I have used is Podcasting. It gave my students the power of listening to themselves read their own words. They were also excited to have their written words and music heard by a "world-wide audience." In my particular class, they also tracked their progress through the year on their violin, and held wonderful discussions about learning to play in tune. Podcasting is easy and a wonderful tool to connect parents with your class.
