Our 11-year-old, the only G&T in his school, is effectively ignored and insultingly disrgearded by his head teacher. He almost cried when he saw this, and watched it over and over. He saw someone he could aspire to be; he recognised himself in the...

Last year - waiting for jury duty - I read Nerds: Who They Are and Why We Need More of Them. It's by a child psychologist who looked at the impact of the term "nerd" on children and where the divide between intellectualism and machismo began. I've...

A little about me:
I'm a director of the face to face portion of our local charter school that serves predominately gifted children. We are working under the assumption that the traditional way of schooling children is terribly out of date for adequately preparing our children for their futures. I live for education and being a change-agent for the lives of my students! I also love terriers! ;-)

Blog (if you have one):
The majority of my blogging work has been done at http://classroom20.ning.com/, if you want to see some odd rantings! For the most part, however, I'm more of an interactive participant in these networks, talking with others rather than simply speaking out to the air via a blog.
What age of student/person do you have an interest in mostly?
ages 8-18, but I run the gamut for gifted children

a slight presentation with Google Documents

Marcia Law and I have been preparing for a small 20 minute presentation. Since we were building it together, we thought we'd use Google Documents (the presentation format) to share the load.

I wonder if it will embed here:

Ha! Nope. It wouldn't. I'll have to mess around with my HTML boxes to see if I can share that here or only on other Google software. Stay tuned!

Real People Don't Have Time for Social Media

Traveling back and forth between conferences and also talking to people new to social media, one of the biggest fears I'm hearing about jumping into a 2.0 world is that there's simply not enough time in their lives to learn and participate.

This tells me 2 things: people DO understand that to learn from social media, you need to invest time. Additionally, our time is a precious commodity (which we all have to guard jealously).

With this in mind, I'm sharing an article that I just read called "… Continue

KGTC Region 5 conference

Yesterday my students and I were asked to be the opening keynote presenters for the Kansas Association for the Gifted Talented and Creative (KGTC) Region 5 conference at Wichita State University, hosted and coordinated by Charlie Mahoney and Marjorie Landwehr-Brown. The theme was 21st Century Learning and Global Education/Connections. While I like to think that Turning Point Learning Center… Continue

Del Siegle presented some of the big issues in Gifted Ed in the US today.

#1 He's had a little baby recently and that is, of course, a big deal!

Which is more important? Advocacy or Policy? (they work hand-in-hand)

NAGC is working with a marketing consultancy to continue the advocacy campaign to change the public's attitude toward gifted kids and gifted education. These kids deserve, as every other kid does, the ability to learn something new every day.

NAGC is creating a press "rapid respon… Continue

Finding Answers to parents' BIG Questions (at the NAGC website)

Notes from preso by Robin Schader regarding the NAGC website resources. The presentation was held March 2, 2008, so if you find these links broken later, contact me and I'll do what I can to find them for you!

A good place to start is the new NAGC website.

What are the big questions?

1) How do I know if my child is gifted (and what about testing?)

2) What IS gifted?

3) Now what do I do and where do I learn more?

Let's break it down and make iContinue

I am hoping the district will send me to NAGC convention. We have eight teachers in the district. I am not sure the budget is there to get us all there. I do love that it is in my home town no hotel costs.

Thank you for the words of welcome. I just spent the day in a workshop given by Otto Schmidt. As you can imagine, I have a lot of information to digest and some serious reflecting on my teaching practices. I'm looking forward to future discussions.

Thanks for the welcome. I am really excited about being a part of the gifted ed family. I am a member of KGTC, and attended the conference last year. I am currently in the Master's program at ESU. Just finished my first practicum with Nancy Bosch and Courtney Moffitt in SMSD, and now I can't wait to get my own class of gifted kids! But finding a job in Gifted ed in this economy is proving to be daunting at best. But I am keeping a positive attitude!

Hi Ginger - Sorry I missed your message from Nov 18th. Someone else just sent me a message via this Ning and then I saw yours.

Yes, I am the new chair of NAGC's Computers and Technology network. I would love to share some ideas with you. I am expecting to roll out a whole new network in the new year. I would love to have you involved.
