My personal opinion is that a teacher working with a gifted population should be flexible and creative, first and foremost! I think that those two traits go a long way with gifted kids. I also think it helps to be able to banter with the children ...

And we all feel somewhat inadequate when faced with those questioning minds. I always tell students right up front,"I do not have all of the answers, but I can point you in the right direction to help you find answers."

Being gifted could actually be a disadvantage!! A person would never survive as a gifted facilitator if they had all the 'quirkinesses' of gifted kids! I'm the mom of three gifted sons and have taught gifted kids for 25 years and this is what I br...

I agree that a person does not need to be "gifted" in order to teach Gifted education students. Helping students how to learn, problem solve, apply knowlege, and how to go outside the box is drawn from my own life experiences. My life experiences ...

My Page Title

I'm calling my page "...and you think YOU can work with the gifted?" because that's what my husband and grown daughters say anytime I do something rather dumb, or when I can't figure out a simple mathematics calculation. They giggle when I pull out my cell phone to figure out a tip. Once a middle-school math teacher blanched and made disapproving remarks when I counted on my fingers during a meeting. If I'm in the teachers' workroom at my school, and other teachers are standing around, someone w… Continue

Do You Believe in Dwarfs?

I apologize to any Little People who object to the term "dwarf." I would never say "dwarf" in a conversation in the year 2008, and I respect that any group can decide what to call themselves. I only use the term because in context, it is part of this story.

About 25 years ago, I knew a woman whose son was a Little Person, a very smart kid named David. She told me that when David was 11 years old, he was playing in a park. Another kid approached him and asked if he wanted to play. The kid asked… Continue

Digital Footprint?

OK, I need some education about what exactly is a digital footprint, and what I want it to be like, and why. I have a vague inkling what this term is about, but I would like some language to share with my students when I discuss with them.

I'm working on my Shelfari plans, and my kids have had a look at it. It's amazing how a visual format makes a huge difference in the attention and excitement lavished on what is merely a booklist.

Stuff I wanted to tell Ginger after the NAGC Convention

I learned a ton at the convention in Tampa.
Then I came back to my classroom with the broken (this is week 3) computer!
And when it is ever fixed, it is old and slow!

I spent today showing 5 of my student groups the new Shelfari I put on my website for their parents. I was using a borrowed laptop, incidentally.
I will be working on another Shelfari for the kids' page of my website. I have been wanting to make a booklist for them, and Shelfari really fits the bill, because they want to look at i… Continue

If you can embed video into your own website, I'd suggest you "rip" the video from YouTube and embed it alone. That's one of the things that's a little dangerous about YouTube in a traditional school.

How you "rip" the video: Go to www.zamzar.com, add the URL to the page, add your email, then in an hour or so (depending on the traffic they're getting), you'll get an email with a link where you can download the video by itself. I LOVE this. Be sure to choose a format that's compatible with your computer. I use a mac, so I choose .mov. If you use Windows, you may want to choose .wmv as your format.

Let me know if you have problems with this. I can also send you a different media converter, but Zamzar has never let me down!

Shelfari: I think you have to sign in with a different email address each time. I have a class email address that no one uses for email, but we use for class accounts on Flickr.com and Ustream.TV. The kids are able to log in on their own with that info, but I have control of that email address.

I don't have a Shelfari for my students, but I did create one for our KGTC state gifted organization. Unfortunately, since we don't use it often, I'm not sure of the email address OR the password. Durh. I'll have to find that out and put that back out to the membership again!
