Ginger Lewman Real People Don't Have Time for Social Media

Traveling back and forth between conferences and also talking to people new to social media, one of the biggest fears I'm hearing about jumping into a 2.0 world is that there's simply not enough time in their lives to learn and participate. This tells me 2 things: people DO understand that to learn from social media, you need to invest time. Additionally, our time is a precious commodity (which we all have to guard jealously). With this in mind, I'm sharing an article that I just read called "… Continue

ceego What's Missing

First, apologies to those I may have been pestering. I am a little hyper about learning about g/t! I am listing the things I *think* are essential to a g/t student/classroom (in no particular order); please let me know your thoughts - especially if you believe I am in error or missing something: 1. Pre-testing is essential – 85% indicates mastery; g/t are easily bored with endless review of content they already mastered; they need less repetition to learn a new skill 2. Higher level thinking… Continue

Found a great site: http://www.nlvm.usu.edu/ by clicking around on the prufrock.com blog. Love the type and amount of math manipulatives available and the way it is organized. It would have a lot of uses in the classroom, but is also a lot of fun for kids to explore with on their own. Continue

Brandi Blogging as a researcher-good idea or not?

I intend to keep a weblog (blog) about my experiences as a participant within the social network I create for gifted kids. A weblog is a (Add definition and cite) I have weighed the idea of making the blog public rather than keeping it private and out of view from my student participants because I believe my transparency as a researcher will help build trust within the network and help me build rapport with my participants very quickly. They will begin to know me as a person, rather than a teach… Continue

Authoethnography is basically a the personal story of my research journey. Del Siegle presented some of the big issues in Gifted Ed in the US today. #1 He's had a little baby recently and that is, of course, a big deal! Which is more important? Advocacy or Policy? (they work hand-in-hand) NAGC is working with a marketing consultancy to continue the advocacy campaign to change the public's attitude toward gifted kids and gifted education. These kids deserve, as every other kid does, the ability to learn something new every day. NAGC is creating a press "rapid respon… Continue

Notes from preso by Robin Schader regarding the NAGC website resources. The presentation was held March 2, 2008, so if you find these links broken later, contact me and I'll do what I can to find them for you! A good place to start is the new NAGC website. What are the big questions? 1) How do I know if my child is gifted (and what about testing?) 2) What IS gifted? 3) Now what do I do and where do I learn more? Let's break it down and make i… Continue

Brandi Web 2.0

I am in the process of writing up the my findings on Web 2.0. The difficult part I am running into is the research is scarce due to the fact that this concept is fairly new. I found an interesting term I would like to go deeper with. The term is digital natives. These are kids who have been living with technology their whole lives and it is second nature to them. We educators are immigrants into this digital world. Marc Prensky is the guy who coined the term and his article… Continue

Brandi Social networking and gifted students

I am trying to narrow down my research because the topic of web 2.0 and gifted education is too big!!! Duh, why didn't I see this coming:-) I found this quote from an article I am reading and it struck me. Brandi Research is fun...how can that be?

I am enjoying my research very much. I am thinking it is because I am reading about the future of education in the form of Web 2.0. I remember being a part of the whole language movement and then how everyone said we had to mix phonics and whole language to be effective. I wonder if technology could be the same and then came to the conclusion that--not it won't. Technology is not going away and I think we are crazy to think we can turn our backs on it. Today I wondered: 1. How will we teach stud… Continue

Ginger Lewman Evolution of my Blogging

People ask me, as I move through the g/t crowds, what is blogging?

I'm always taken aback to think 1) they don't know what it is, 2) that they feel safe enough to ask me, because I won't make fun of them. So I take a deep breath, saying with an even voice, that's it's like journaling only it's online. It's a self-reflective method to help a person improve their ideas, thoughts, and actions. But by blogging, you get to open your thoughts and ideas to others, who can then comment… Continue

Nancy Bosch Old School Images

I love using primary sources in the classroom. When I was designing my students' blog site header I found tons of pictures of "old" classrooms. When I was a kid (in the mid-50s) there were 35 students in my elementary classes. I've had people tell me than in their parochial elementary classes there would be 50 students! Judy Dreeszen Identification of gifted students

One of the biggest issues I have is identifying students into the gifted program. I would like to know what other districts are using for their identification process. We have a matrix, but if the test score on the IQ portion of our screening isn't high enough, we can't get them to qualify. It is very frustrating. I would like examples of other matrixes (sp?) or other ways school districts help to identify students. Continue
