Gifted Education 2.0

Real life collaboration regarding all issues in Gifted Education

I developed a 6 hour GT professional development called "Great Books for Gifted Kids." The latest version (I never can leave it alone) pairs great books with the social emotional needs of gifted kids and also incorporates some web 2.0 tools. As part of the professional development, participants contributed to a wiki.

I'd like the wiki to become a truly valuable resource for teachers of gifted students. I'm inviting you to contribute. Is there a book you've used with your gifted readers and had great success? Are you willing to share your lesson plan or find some posted online? Check out the wiki and help us build a solid valuable resource!

Konigsburg's A View from Saturday is fantastic because it's about a set of pseudo-outcasts (who all seem very gifted) whose teacher sees something wonderful in them and nutures their talent.

Frindle is a great book to add - that love of language and dogged pursuit of a concept. I love everything Konigsburg has done. Her books are full of GT characters.

I love that you included Holes...always a favorite. My classes have always loved Frindle - an original idea that goes somewhere is so powerful. I also really like From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankenweiler. It is an old one, for sure, but I love how it models a girl thinking creatively - not only in how she chooses to run away from home, but also in how she solves the mystery. For older kids, maybe as an independent read the Artemis Fowl books are amazing. Just my thoughts!

I've got a link to Tamara Fisher's blog post on the wiki already. A number of the books on my list came from hers. I'll check out your blog for more titles.

Scan my blog, I've mentioned many books that we've read aloud and the kids love. I can give more specifics--I have a 'gifted' library in my classroom and I can tell you what kids love. Also search Tamara Fisher's blog Unwrapping the Gift--she wrote a long post on bibliotherapy for gifted.

I agree. If I can, I'll add it. Maybe someone else will add that page :) Dr. Kingore isn't such a supporter of that book because there are a lot of negative portrayals in it. She mentions that in one of the articles on her web site. She has a good point. I do like Matilda though :)

No time to sign in and all that, but your list should include "Matilda" by Roald Dahl.

Who's coming in, and from where?
